How to make Maki sushi?

Ahem... Welcome to Lulu's class of 'How to make Maki sushi? '

Now, before we get started, we must make sure all the tools and ingredients needed are ready. To make maki sushi, one will need:

Rice -you can use ordinary local rice or Japanese rice. Make sure the rice is not too sticky or too dry.

Sushi vinegar -you can buy this ready made from supermarket. usually, the ratio of rice to vinegar is 5:1. or you can make your own sushi vinegar, by adding salt, sugar to rice vinegar or apple cider. make sure you keep stirring the heated vinegar while you try to melt the salt and sugar.

Nori sheets - dried seaweed sheets, can be local or imported, available from any supermarket, and

Bamboo mat - use for rolling the sushi

Now, Lulu is going to show you how to make the most common maki sushi, very handy too

The ingredients needed are:

Kappa - cucumber sliced into long strips, make sure the seeds are removed

Imitation crab meat, and/or prawns -make sure they are dried after cooking them in boiling water

Tamagoyaki -slightly sweet omelette cut into long strips.

To begin, firstly, place the nori sheet on the bamboo mat, then start pressing the vinegared rice evenly into a thin layer on the nori, leaving about 5cm space at one side

Arrange the ingredients accordingly onto the rice

Then you can start rolling. Make sure the rolls are firm enough.

When the rolls are done, cut them into pieces of bite size. Make sure you soak the knife in cold water before you cut. This will prevent the rice from sticking onto the knife.
Deng Deng Deng Deng.... Here comes the yummy maki!

p/s: one thing good about maki is that one can try using many different kind of ingredients for the fillings, up to one's creativity. and if the rolls are not satisfactory, just put them into your mouth and evidence is cleared. and remember, practice makes perfect! enjoy yourself!
