Human Genome Project

4/9/07 Tuesday Cloudy

Still Advance Molecular Biology lecture, but this 3rd and 4th modules are taught by Dr Ed. Today is the second lecture of the 3rd module. Well, I should say I really enjoyed the lecture today. It could be due to the topic itself, or the way Dr. Ed conducts the lecture. Differs from others, Dr Ed. will give a general view, then will slowly 'zoom in' to the details. It is helpful for students like me who learn things by understanding the relationship, chronology, how they link to one another. He will lead the students to some thinking, by asking us questions, and linking how the topics play into role in our lives.

The topics that we discussed today was Human Genome Project (HGP). A 13 year mega project, a joint effort from scientists all over the world, and the info from it will affect us from all aspects of our life, especially biomedical related aspect. Dr Ed. pinpointed that all the infos from NCBI, that we used to take them for granted, are efforts of scientists that some of them we might never hear their name, and involve investments from many, and money from taxpayers.... We should feel appreciate. And by telling the history of how HGP started, we came to see how science progress. It's like everybody, from the past to the near present, provides clues or pieces of the puzzle that one day, in future, will make up the whole picture. That's the wonder of science!

I guess what I learned from this lecture is :

1. Science is a process, and as scientists we have to try our very best to contribute to the knowledge and also to appreciate what others had done in the past that enables us to proceed from there.

2. Being an educator is not just about teaching the knowledge itself, but also the 'spirit', the 'value' and the 'meaning' behind the knowledge. That's how we, students, judge teachers, lecturers and educators, either as being 'great', 'good', 'so so' or 'nah...'. Maybe we don't realise it at the time, but sure we will feel it one day.

3. We have to think global starting now! It's not about 'us' anymore. It's about 'everybody' and 'the world' or else we will be left behind. We may be local at heart but we must think global!
