I-HMGL

I-HMGL, or Immunology-Human Molecular Genetics Lab is the place where Lulu spends most of her time there, second after her house. And she will be spending another 3-4 years time at this place once she enroll for her PhD study this coming December. (For your information, previously it was named HMGL in the old UNIMAS campus.) So, I'm gonna give you a tour around the lab.

This is the front entrance. When you pull open the door and enter, you'll see on your right and left:

Now, where can you find Lulu?

Here! Her place is just near the main entrance, facing the door. Meaning she'll see anybody who comes into the lab from the front door. The left bench is where she does her work and the right bench is where she does her reading, calculations, thinking, and sometimes Zzzzz....

And let me introduce to you some of the interesting stuffs here in I-HMGL.

Firstly, the Egg; Secondly, the Guns

the dinosour egg-looking thing is a microcentrifuge machine, whereas the 'guns' are pipetters for aliquoting chemicals and reagents.

and also these important items, which is part of Lulu's routine work in lab:

On the left is a PCR machine. This machine is one of the most wonderful invention in research. It can amplify a copy of DNA into thousands or millions or billions of copies provided the condition is optimised. In simple words, it's something that acts like a photocopy machine, just that it photocopies DNA! On the right are gel electrophoresis systems or gel tanks. DNAs are loaded into the gel wells and subjected to electrophoresis before we visualise them under UV light.

This is a slice of gel in gel tank filled with buffer. Notice the little wells on the left of the gel? That's where DNAs or RNAs are loaded.

On the left is a common equipment that you can find in the kitchen of your house. There are 2 units in I-HMGL. But on the right, what you see is not something 'common' in your kitchen. haha. This is how it looks like when the fridge doors are opened. PCR tubes etc...
Ok, before we leave the lab, let's peek into Lulu's drawer and cabinet and see what she's keeping secretly...
Hmmm... Dictionaries, books, all kept in an organised way. Guess she is a good student, don't you think so? Haha.
