Book list for PhD and PhD-to-be

In response and in addition to CK's entry, I'm listing here a list of books that I think are worth reading for anyone who's thinking of doing a PhD or is currently doing one (especially in the field of life science). I'm listing them according to stages in PhD because I personally experienced situations like 'I should've read this before I started' or 'If I have known this earlier'. So, to save the life of future generations of PhD to come (haha), here goes the list:

Before you start your PhD (these books will give you a better idea of what research life is about and to get your mind prepared for the PhD journey)
  • Who wants to be a Scientist? Choosing Science as a Career by Nancy Rothwell
  • How to get a PhD: A Handbook for Students and their Supervisors by Estelle Phillips & D.S. Pugh
  • The Research Student's Guide to Success by Pat Cryer
  • The Unwritten Rules of PhD Research by Marian Petre & Gordon Rugg

First / Early years of PhD (Phd is not only about studying, it is also about self management and self development)

  • The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Covey
  • Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy
  • Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins
  • Critical Reading: Making Sense of Research Papers in Life Sciences and Medicine by Ben Yudkin
  • The Craft of Research by Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb & Joseph M. Williams

Middle years towards completing your PhD (the most important thing for you now is to produce the thesis and pass your viva, and also to think about what you wanna do after your PhD)
  • A PhD is not Enough: A Guide to Survival in Science by Peter J. Feibelman
  • Scientific Writing: A Reader and Writer's Guide by Jean - Luc Lebrun (I consider a 'must-read' before you start writing a manuscript or your thesis)
  • The Literature Review: A step-by-step Guide for Students by Diana Ridley
  • Authoring a PhD: How to Plan, Draft, Write and Finish a Doctoral Thesis or Dissertation by Patrick Dunleavy
P/s: I would like to make it clear that the above books are those that I have personally read or am currently reading that are available to me. There are many other good or even better books in the market that I have no access to. Remember to fully utilize the resources in your uni library. And my piece of advice is: it's always better to know about some stuffs earlier than later. So start reading earlier!
